Open Software Day
Tonight was RCM Laptop Orchestra’s first ‘open software’ day. This is less about open source, and more like the equivalent of bring-your-own-sausages to rehearsal evening and the results were really productive! Members of the orchestra brought in software including the likes of
+Max/MSP
+MOTU Digital Performer
+Native Instruments Battery/Cubase
+Apple GarageBand
+Apple Logic Pro
+Ableton Live
+Renoise

Short improvisation in groups of 3
During the session we learned a little bit about the different styles and skills that each member brings to the orchestra. In addition, we tested a few simple methods of improvisation and continued to mould these ideas until we were able to perform with very little if any vocal communication and instead relying on visual gestures like eye contact and hand signals.
We also discussed Max/MSP boot camp which will be run by Christopher Chong later this term and the possibility of forming teams to sort out networked pieces and live visuals through Fluxus, MOTU Digital Performer and Final Cut Pro.
For details of the bootcamp keep checking online here and in your inbox!
