Networked laptops - Tim Yates
Networked laptops - Tim Yates
A piece by Tim - current member
Current member of Laptop Orchestra, Tim Yates, is a composer and guitarist at the RCM and has made significant progress on his networked laptop piece. We had a small technical session to test his new instrument designed specifically for the RCM Laptop Orchestra using 3 sound generators and 9 laptop performers all vying for control of the sounds basic waveforms and frequency ratios among other effects such as phasing and distortion.

As a miniature test for this work in progress Christopher Chong, David Rafferty, Tim (the composer/designer) and Michael Oliva (Area Leader for Electroacoustics) successfully completed a test run of the system. Sonically it is inspired indian drones and the interface we had to the sound generators allowed for a great deal of expressive control. A great achievement for a system full of network/OSC parts that worked surprisingly well after an initial compatibility issue between Mac/PC software.
Look forward to Tim’s piece later this easter along with many others at the RCM Laptop Orchestra concert!
